The “Yellow Wallpaper” is a vivid, partially autobiographical tale of clinical depression and the battle for selfhood, written by an early feminist, Charlotte Perkins Gilman. This short story is concentrating on the American Gothic Fiction Literary Movement. This story has to do with a lady who defends her right to express what she feels, and fights for her right to do what she wishes to do.
The storyteller in this short story is a female whose spouse loves her quite, however oppresses her to the point where she can not take it anymore. It revolves around the main character, her oppressed life, and her look for liberty.
The very first attribute of American Gothic fiction seen in “The Yellow Wallpaper” is the dark, frightening setting. The setting is which the story occurs is in the narrators space, where she is severally ill, and she is “secured” in the space which functioned as her cage. The space in which the narrator is caged in is a nursery, “it is a big, airy room, the entire floor nearly, with windows that look all ways. The paint and paper appear a kids’ school had used it.” The storyteller describes the color of the walls as repellent, almost revolting, it is an uncertain yellow with a dull orange. The condition that the storyteller is in, the repulsiveness of the room, and the room haunting her, drives her into insanity.
The second quality of American Gothic fiction is the method Gilman utilizes the wallpaper to be frightening. She is also extremely mindful that what she perceives in the wallpaper is frightening and provoking, and yet disappears or no less than the phantoms of apprehensions a kid sees in a dark space. She even uses an example from her past in which she kept in mind a “strong” chair that could save her from any terror-laden inanimate items that threatened her. She later then becomes keen on the room because of the wallpaper, and not for a switch in understanding, she does not think the wallpaper charming all the unexpected. Instead she becomes fond of its vociferous ugliness.
The third attribute of American Gothic fiction is violence. The storyteller, limited to her bedroom by her insisting doctor hubby, undergoes violence in the type of insanity due to the fact that of his authoritative actions. The violence manifests in her mind since of the yellow wallpaper in the bed room, and gets progressively worse throughout the story. The narrator’s physician spouse, John, thinks he is helping his partner’s depressed condition by confining her to a 3rd flooring bedroom with disallowed windows. In truth, he produces a domestic prison where his spouse has absolutely nothing but her own ideas and a journal to pass away the time. John does not even want his wife to journal, as the storyteller states, “… but John says the extremely worst thing I can do is to consider my condition, and I admit it constantly makes me feel bad” (p. 93). John is completely oblivious to the reality that his medical-opinioned “treatment” remained in truth driving his spouse insane.
The 4th characteristic of American Gothic fiction in the story comes at the end when the narrator concentrates on the supernatural. She pictures that there are ladies creeping around behind the patterns of the wallpaper, and pertains to believe that she is one of them. She locks herself in the room, now the only location where she feels safe, refusing to leave when the summer season rental is up. “For outside you have to sneak on the ground, and whatever is green instead of yellow. However here I can creep smoothly on the floor, and my shoulder simply fits in that long smooch around the wall, so I can not lose my way. (Gilman 8777)
In conclusion, Gilman was a ladies’s rights activist in the late 1800’s and she used her fiction to raise feminist issues and to bring about a modification in their scenarios. She did a terrific job of exemplifying the American Gothic Fiction Motion in, “The Yellow Wallpaper,” telling a story of a woman allured within the confines of her marriage and her expected roles as a female and it is this maybe that causes the woman’s insanity.
