Essay Question: Analyze how Steinbeck presents the character of Curley’s spouse in ‘Of Mice and Guys’ The popular novella ‘O Mice and Men’ was written by John Steinbeck, in which all characters play an enormous function. Firstly the time in which this book was composed has a direct impact on the characters life style and character. As we understand, this novel was composed throughout the time of the excellent depression, which was based in 1929.
It was called the fantastic depression, due to the fact that it lasted for approximately ten years. Throughout this time ladies had no rights and were been plentiful and separated from social activities.
They were understood to be the ownership of their partner. In this novella Steinbeck shows us 2 view on the character of Curley’s partner, however our understanding of her modifications without herself really altering. As a reader we know how she is without even seen her. She was very first discussed by Sweet, as he was explaining her to George. Through her description we know that “she got the eye”, implying that she is an individual who can cause risk to others. In addition Candy explained her as a “tart”, “tramp” and a “bitch”.

Also Steinbeck describes her as a “lady” rather of a “woman”. This reveals that he is notifying the reader about her character and how she is. Ladies are mainly referred to as immature and innocent which they don’t have sufficient understanding about the world, where as a lady is a much fully grown person with a larger understanding about the world and life. Curley’s partner is referred to as a lady, because she is being looks down at and not appreciated as she must be it also stresses her vulnerability.
