Moby Dick– Sign of the Flawed American
Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is the foundation of American culture. Melville captures the essence of this idea in Moby Cock as the main character; Ishmael takes a venture at sea. Moby Cock reveals America’s amenability through the parallels of Ishmael and Queequeg, 2 characters who were very diverse. Ishmael was an average American while Queequeg’s temperament showed something other and different from an average American. Through their difference, Ishmael was still pliable in their connection.
Although America seems marvelous, Herman Melville illustrates a hidden darkness that opposes America’s great track record. The link between Ahab and Moby Cock delineates this darkness. Ahab has a quest to catch this whale for unhealthy reasons. Ahab states to Starbuck, “It was Moby Dick that dismasted me. It was that accursed white whale that raised me ¦ and I’ll chase him round Good Hope (page #) Here Herman Melville points the reader to the concept that Ahab is a cursed male with a fixation to record Moby Penis through a severe cost. It remained in Ahab’s will to possess/sustain revenge on Moby for taking his leg.
The accursed thing is not always what least allures tates that the evil figure, in this case Moby Dick, is what is most yearned for. Applying this quote, makes the reader fully mindful that though in Ahab’s mind, Moby was a malicious entity, he still wanted to catch Moby. Ahab felt entitled to have power over Moby Dick. The easy truth that Moby could be was the dominant figure in their relationship outraged Ahab; He needed to feel exceptional and in charge. It is prominent in American culture to feel needed to appear strong, stronger than all else in some sense.
It is less popular in American culture to want to be submissive, refusing to send to higher powers. In schools, students exemplify this principle through academics, and sports, where the most popular and “effective kids in school are the ones who play sports and/or excel academically. Finding and striking Moby Penis would assist to stop and meet this homicidal desire to enact revenge upon Moby. It is a piece of American culture to constantly be effective and in control in addition to engaging in monomaniacal behavior to continuously be seeking happiness. Herman Melville mean the “unholy side of being American with Ahab’s character.
After meeting Ahab, Ishmael responds “when the wicked king was killed, the pets, did they not lick his blood (page #). Ishmael is describing King Ahab in the bible, which was a wicked figure. Melville is indicating that Ahab is not the heroic, determined figure that some might see him to be, but he is the wicked part of humanity that all of us try to hide. Ahab is flawed in greed, dependency and the appetite for power. Starbuck states the reasons Ahab is continuously going after Moby, “There would be great splendor in eliminating him ¦ there is a shipload of precious sperm in him page number).
While Herman Melville is illustrating Ahab’s rapacity, he also manages represent why Ahab has such a fixation with Moby Cock. Ahab’s pride will not let him turn away from his fixation and hence he is dependent on catching Moby Dick to increase his self-confidence. Ahab’s addiction to pursue Moby was a self-destructing piece of human nature that is a shaming quality for Americans; to constantly be looking for methods to be motivate their egos, making the appear rather worried. Being an African, Latin American, my reading experience throughout Moby Dick was rather various.
Embarrassed to say, I found myself constantly trying to link Herman Melville’s ideas to a flawed American society. I found methods to make Moby Dick about how overbearing and special Americans are to groups of individuals aside from white Americans. After long idea, I concerned a realization that my thoughts were being assisted by my really own culture. Maturing in New York City and being born into the shelter, renting apartment or condos, and simply viewing the method African American and Latino Americans lived compared to the way Caucasian Americans lived impacts my feelings towards race issues.
There is a major divide between Caucasians and others. The primary factor of this is because of area and educations. In society, people live within their own groups of race for the many part. In these living departments, children of various races go to various schools. It’s established to where black and hispanic kids participate in schools where education is poor, while white kids have the advantage to receive an abundant education. In order to prosper as somebody besides Caucasian, one need to work incredibly hard to make the best of their education. I, myself strove to get a rich education at FM.
There is an obvious, unjust distinction in the way a black/ Hispanic dominant school works compared to the ways of white dominant school. The kids here at FM are fortunate to have a great education system together with lots of activities and they do not realize it. The idea of a typical American society, which involves “ideal” and “sinless” white Americans, agitates me. I feel as if the word American must consist of all Americans: white, African, Asian, and Latino. It is bothersome when American describes the Caucasian Americans only. I do not think there is just one American method to be due to the fact that there are many Americans.
