Of Mice and Men: a look into the relationships in the book.Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck is a short book that displays numerous forms of interactions with other individuals and different types of relationships. Lennie, George, Candy, and Slim reveal the most friendship within the unique, and they assist each other through tough times. The relationship that is most common through out the book is that in between George and Lennie. George is constantly helpful to Lennie, in almost all situations. We initially see this in the beginning of the story when the two of them are at the pond, and Lennie bends over to drink the unclean water.”‘Lennie!’ he said sharply. Lennie, for God’sakes don’t consume a lot. […] You gon na be sick like you was last night.'(3 )” This shows that George truly takes care of Lennie’s well-being; he does not desire him to become ill. In the bunkhouse, George was telling Slim about the relationship that he and Lennie utilized to have, when George liked to play tricks on him. “I used to have a hell of a great deal of enjoyable with’im. Used to play jokes on ‘im ’cause he was too dumb to know. […] Inform you what made me stop that. One day a lot of guys was standin’around up on the Sacremento River. I was feelin’ pretty clever. I turns to Lennie and states’ Jump in.
‘ An’he jumps. Couldn’t swim a stroke. He damn near drowned before we might get to him. An ‘he was so damn good to me for pullin’him out. Clean forgot I told him to jump in. Well, I ain’t not done anything like that no more. (44) “George then came to comprehend how defenseless Lennie truly was. He learned that he was more in control of Lennie’s actions than Lennie was of himself. George does not play techniques on him anymore since he is afraid that he may harm Lennie badly. George is constantly attempting to be sure that Lennie likes him and doesn’t resent him. This is shown after George removes Lennie’s mouse and guarantees
to get him a puppy. They overheard Slim discussing his canine having puppies and George quickly said to Lennie, “Yeah! I heard him Lennie. I’ll ask him.(40)”George wants to ensure that Lennie won’t be upset with him, so he keeps his pledges. Lennie feels unique due to the fact that of his relationship to George. He oftentimes will make George inform him again and again how they are various from other people.”‘ With us it ain’t like that. We got a future. We got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us. [… If them other men gets in jail they can rot for all anyone offers a damn. But not us.’ Lennie broke in.’But not us! An ‘why? Because … because I got you to care for me, and you got me to look after you, which’s why.'( 14)”Lennie constantly enjoys being assured that George will forever stick with him, through thick and thin. Lennie usually likes individuals, and enjoys making new friendships. This is completely revealed when Lennie was in the barn and wished to talk with Crooks. After a brief argument, Crooks states,” Come on in and set a while, long as you do not leave me alone, you may as well set down. 76 )”Crooks enjoys to have Lennie talk with him, because he is so frequently shunted because he is an African-American. Another relationship in Of Mice and Men is that in between Candy and his pet dog. Candy’s pet is old and represents the average old worker who is not able to keep up with the work. Everybody wants her to leave, because none desire any problem with Curley. Curley has difficulty being in any kind of relationship with anyone. George warns Lennie not to even speak with him.”You keep away from Curley, Lennie. […] Don’t let him pull you in– but– if the son-of-a-bitch socks you– let’im have it. 30) “Curley came into the bunkhouse trying to find his better half at one point in the unique, and Lennie was smiling at something, however Curley believed he was laughing at him. He began choosing a battle, and Lennie just let Curley struck him, until he heard George inform him to combat back. Lennie then proceeded to crush Curley’s hand in his own. Relationships play a big function in Of Mice and Male. The bond between George and Lennie is unlike any other, and is the most important in the story. There are other essential relationships through out the novel, such as those between Sweet and his dog and Curley and his partner.
