According to Dictionary. com, the American Dream is specified as “The suitables of freedom, equality, and chance traditionally held to be readily available to every American; a life of individual happiness and product convenience as traditionally looked for by people in the U. S (American Dream).
” But everyone’s idea of the American dream is a transformed version of this idea whether it indicated being independent or ending up being richer. In the book Of Mice and Male, lots of characters attempt and pursue the life including the American dream, and in the end, all of their work failed.
At one of the ranches that George and Lennie go to, they fulfill a male named Sweet, who is an old ranch handyman, who is beginning to believe that in charge will quickly fire him since of his aging and disabilities. One day, he over hears George and Lennie talking about their ‘American Dream.’ “S’pose I shared you people … I ain’t much great, however I could prepare and tend the chickens and hoe the garden some” (Steinbeck, pg 59). Although he knows that he isn’t that beneficial, he hopes that George and Lennie will accept his offering and let him have a piece of their dream.
After Candy finds out about Lennie killing Curley’s other half, he understands that his dream had actually simply become more difficult. Scoundrels, the black stableman, is another character that has a dream. “I remember when I was a little kid on my old guy’s chicken cattle ranch. Had two bros. They was always near me, constantly there. Used to sleep right in the very same space, right in the exact same bed- all three. Had a strawberry spot. Had an alfalfa spot” (Steinbeck, pg 73). He desired what his old male had: a cattle ranch, family, and independency.
He also asked George if he could be apart of their cattle ranch … which later we find out that he later on told George to ignore it due to the fact that he knew that in the end, it wouldn’t have actually exercised. Curley’s Partner is another individual who once had a dream. One day she was talking with Lennie and how she nearly satisfied that dream. “Well, a program come through, an’ I satisfied among the stars. He says I might opt for that show … ‘Nother time I met a person, an’ he was in pitchers. Went out to the Riverside Dance Palace with him. He says he was gon na put me in the movies. Says I was a natural.
Quickly’s he got back to Hollywood he was gon na compose to me about it … I never got that letter … I constantly believed my ol’ girl stole it … so I married Curley. Met him out to the Riverside Dance Palace the exact same night” (Steinbeck, pg 88). She plainly had a dream including popularity and fortune. After that dream was crushed by her mom, she followed up with her back up plan to get hitched. It didn’t exercise so fantastic, if you ask me. According to Steinbeck, it was almost difficult, if not, impossible, to accomplish the American dream. Anybody who tried to do so was doing it in vain.
After we see each character describe his/her dream, we see someone/something that obstructs and avoids that specific dream from becoming a reality. So, according to Steinbeck, pursuing the American Dream is to vain as an infant is to difficult labor, each being difficult.——————————– -Work Cited”American Dream.”Dictionary. com Unabridged.
