“The tune of Roland”
Main Characters: Charlemagne- the Christian, Frank king who is especially an ally to the Pope and excellent Conqueror. He was also referred to as Charles the Great. Roland- The “hero” of The Tune of Roland. Very little is understood from him in a historical standpoint. Roland’s awful flaw is pride. Oliver- Roland’s buddy and advisor. Oliver is extremely brave and honorable. He tries to urge Roland to blow his Oliphant to reach the Franks Plot Summary Charlemagne’s army led by Roland is combating the Muslims.
Marsilla, The Muslim king is terrified of Charlemagne’s army and offers to convert to Christianity and give Charlemagne a treasure if he leaves. Charlemagne who does not want to battle any longer greatly accepts the Kings provide. Roland Helps to negotiate the deal and chooses Ganelon to remain behind and deal with Marsilla. Ganelon and Roland do not see eye to eye and Ganelon sees that Roland is doing this just to be mean. As revenge Ganelon inform the Muslims where to assault Roland as he, the caboose of the Army, go through the mountains back into France.
As Ganelon strategies goes along. Roland’s rear guard is assailed and considerably outnumbered. Oliver, Roland’s buddy and advisor, recommends Roland to sound his Oliphant to call the rest of Charlemagne’s army to the rescue. Roland refuses to make this call for help. His army is getting defeated extremely quickly since of their absence of numbers. Near completion of the battle Roland decides to blow his horn even though it is far too late for Charlemagne to save them. He blows the horn so that Charlemagne’s can avenge this attack. Roland blows so hard that he busts open his temple.
When the franks arrive they discover the entire attacked army dead, but they chase the Muslims. They chase them all the way to the River Ebro where they all drown. At the same time the emir of Babylon, Baligant, gets here in Spain to assist Marsilla with the Frankish issue. Baligant and his enormous army go to combat with Charlemagne’s franks. They meet on the battlefield at Roncesvals. Charlemagne eliminates Baligant and the Muslim army scatters. The Franks take the city and after that go back to their home in France, with Marsilla’s spouse Bramimonde. They franks discover Ganelon as a trader and sentence him to the most agonizing death.
