To Kill a Mockingbird-Mayellas Motives for Accusing Tom
In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee there is a repeating them involving racism and incest in the town of Maycomb, Alabama throughout the 1930’s. Mayella Ewell is a nineteen year old lady living at home with her violent drunk father, and 8 more youthful bros and sisters. Her mother passed away thus leaving her to be the mom figure in the poor family. Mayella accuses twenty-five year old black guy Tom Robinson of raping her. Mayella had multiple motives for incorrectly accusing Tom Robinson of her rape. Mayella accused Tom since she was required to by her daddy, Bob Ewell and since that guy is her dad.
It is made extremely clear throughout the trial that it was not Tom Robinson who raped Mayella Ewell, however rather her own daddy. She blamed Robinson because she was evidently coersed by Bob Ewell. In Tom’s testament he mentioned Mayella’s actions before Bob Ewell can be found in, “She says she never ever kissed a guy prior to an’ she may too kiss a nigger. She says what her papa do to her do not count” (page 260). When Bob saw Mayella and Tom together being the mean drunk he is he beat and raped Mayella. In anger, he understood someone would have to pay for what he saw going on between Tom and Mayella.
It was not hard to encourage people in a town like Maycomb that Tom was guilty. He was black, he had a rap sheet known to the people of Maycomb considering that it was such a town, and he lived in the very same area as the Ewells. Individuals had most likely seen Tom getting in the Ewell house since on more than one event, Mayella asked Tom to come in and assist do some work around the house. “She ‘d call me in, suh. Seemed like each time I passed yonder she ‘d have some little somethin’ for me to do” (page 56). Mayella was rushed by her own dad to implicate Tom due to the fact that Tom was such a simple target to conceal her father’s actions.
Mayella wrongly implicated Tom Robinson for another factor too. For the many part, victims love their abusers. Mayella is the victim and Bob Ewell is the abuser. Bob Ewell does refrain from doing anything productive however regardless he is still Mayella’s service provider of many things like a home. Mayella, after being coersed by her dad would much rather come off as the victim of abuse my some ‘evil’ black man than her dad. “That nigger yonder took advantage of me an’ if you great expensive gentlemen don’t wanta do nothin’ about it then ou’re all yellow stinkin’ cowards, stinkin’ cowards, the great deal of you” (page 251). Mayella was the one who initiated the incident too so rather of taking obligation for it she would rather put the blame on a black man who would of course not even have a possibility in court. Mayella accused Tom Robinson for rape when in truth it was Bob Ewell, her daddy. She did this since her dad made her do it and due to the fact that she would much rather blame the black man than confess that she came onto him and that it was really her daddy that beat and raped her.
